The Lonely Heron
He walked alone, all by himself…as if
he owned the entire garden-,
the one behind our house that always looked empty
He was like our very own solitary reaper-,
going about his work matter of factly,
picking up worms & insects in the mornings and evenings
with amazing dexterity!
We enjoyed watching him from our balcony,
his white feathers providing great contrast
against the lush greenery.
We wondered when he would find his soul mate-
the one he could share his life (and insects!) with.
And Lo and behold! a few days later she came along!
joining him in his search for worms, looking pretty and lithe.
But as they say, all good things come to an end..
Our lovely couple flew away too….
maybe to a better place or maybe on their honeymoon…
But I do look out of my balcony everyday,
hoping to see them again very soon!!heron: one of the family of long necked and long legged wading birds solitary reaper: refers to the famous poem by William wordsworth describing the beauty of the song sung by a lonely reaper dexterity: manual skill lush: fresh and tender lithe: flexible
